Here is described configuration step by step, next using the UbuDSL Applet

1. INSTALLATION AND CONFIGUARION

Step one: Installing

  • Download the application's package for your system from the download section

- Ubuntu (simply double click on the downloaded package, type your password if the system asks for this and finally click the Install button)
- openSUSE (simply double click on the downloaded package, type your password if the system asks for this and finally click the Install button)

Step two: Running the application
(The way of the running the application is almost the same in all the Desktop Environment. The only different is the menu's section which the UbuDSL's shortcut is placed in. In GNOME it is the System->Administration section, in KDE and in XFCE System.) Here is described the way for the GNOME Desktop Environment.

  • Go to the System->Administration menu and choose the UbuDSL – Configuration position.

You may be asked for your password – type it and confirm it.
The application will run and you will see the main window as in the screenshot below.

Step three: Main configuration
Tip: Read carefully the texts on the steps' list on the left side. Go to the second step by clicking the next button. You will see the configuration box in the place where previously was the UbuDSL's logo.

  • Enter the service's login and password. Now choose your country and service. If your country and/or service is not listed, you have to know the service's parameters; check the Customize option and enter the parameters. Additionally you can set OpenDNS as the main DNS Servers and whether the connection should be established while system is booting and/or when the user plugs the modem into the USB port.
  • After you made sure you have typed right data click next to start the configuration. Configuring may take from a few seconds to several minutes – it depends on your system and on the modem.

Step four: Post configuration actions

  • After the configuration is finished, quit the application and reboot your computer. Reboot is needed because some modem's drivers must be (re)loaded and, also, the UbuDSL Daemon will be run.

2. USING THE UBUDSL APPLET

  • You can easily manage your connection with the UbuDSL Applet. To run it, go to the Applications menu and choose from the Network section the UbuDSL Applet position. Now you should see the Applet's icon in the system tray (nearby the clock). The icon symbolizes the current state of the connection/modem/daemon.
  • To establish or terminate the connection, right click on the icon and choose the Connect or Disconnect from the shown menu. In the same way you can restart your modem (useful in case of the connecting impossibility), generate the log, open the settings window where you can check or change the connection's settings like login or password. To show or hide the Connection Monitor double click on the UbuDSL Applet's icon or shoose show/hide from the menu.

3. TROUBLESHOOTING

  • If you have any troubles in configuration or in using UbuDSL, first, have a look at the FAQ tab.
  • If your problem is not described there or the tip does not help, please generate the log in the UbuDSL Applet (choose the Generate log position from the applet's menu) answering the asked questions in the Log Generator's wizard and describing the problem. After the log is generated send it at ubudsl(at)gmail(dot)com.
